The World Machine- OxNet Access Week at Pembroke College 30th July-4th August 2017
Under the auspices of OxNet, Pembroke College is hosting the following summer schools this week: Science, Humanities, Theology & Religion and The Ordered Universe. The Access Week offers an opportunity for participants in OxNet activity from across the U.K to join together and spend time immersed in academic activity. The summer school timetable leaves plenty of time for private study, group work focused on tutorial problems and posters, and free time offering the young people attending the opportunity to engage in various seminars, lectures and private study. Participants from across the different regions where OxNet is active (London, North West and North East England) will have an individual responsibility to manage their time and to complete given assignments. Alongside the main learning streams of the access week, there will be occasional slots during the week were shared a lectures or events will be organised. Humanities and theology pupils may participate in a science lecture and scientists may attend a history or theology seminar or lecture.
Throughout the week a team of undergraduate mentors will be supporting participants – providing information about student life and help with academic activities. This week is designed to give young people a taste of studying at a research intensive university and participants are asked to throw themselves into both the academic work and the non-academic activities.
OxNet would also like to extend a special welcome to our guests from overseas; those from Tufts University, Boston in the United States and those pupils and mentors who are attending from rural India via the Karta Institute. We are also delighted to welcome our OxNet Resident Artist for the week, Alex Carr. More about her celebrated work can be found at www.alexandracarr.co.uk. The week will end with a formal Joseph Owen Dinner will be in Hall on Thursday which all the Access College will attend.
