North West Theology and Religious Studies Centre

The North West Theology & Religious Studies Centre was launched at Ashton Sixth Form College in 2013 in partnership with Pembroke College, Oxford. The Centre aims to promote the study of Theology, Religion & Philosophy above and beyond the curriculum through a year-long programme of academic events supported by Lancaster University, the University of Manchester, Durham University and the University of Sheffield, including study days for Year 12 pupils around specific themes such as 'Justice Retribution! Forgiveness!', 'Life, Death and Sex: Can Ethics Help?' and 'The Age of Stupid: Climate Change'.

For the first time in 2016/17, the Centre will also be offering an academic programme to 25 students in the North West, based on the Pembroke North Humanities model and delivered in collaboration with partner universities. The programme is structured around the theme, ‘Reverting to God? Religion and Belief in an Age of Conflict,’ and will utilise a range of approaches: religious studies, theology, philosophy, ethics and history. Pupils on this course will attend a study day, a 6-week seminar series, an Easter conference and a summer school. The aim of the programme is to encourage and support students, regardless of where they would like to progress to after school/college, to consider the enduring relevance of pursuing the study of Theology, Religion & Philosophy at a higher level.
